The New York Guard is an all-volunteer state defense force which augments the New York Army and Air National Guard in state emergencies and during training. Members of the New York Guard serve within the borders of the state at the direction of Governor David Paterson. Unless they are on special state active duty they serve in an unpaid status.
The New York Guard was first organized during World War I when members guarded reservoirs and other key infrastructure around the state in the absence of the New York National Guard. The New York Guard Band, base at the Camp Smith Training Site and under the direction of New York Guard Captain Douglas Hedwig, preserves that tradition and performs at community events.
