New York State AFL-CIO Announces Endorsement of Congressman Mike McMahon

(Labor Coordinating Grassroots Campaign on Behalf of Congressman)

ALBANY, NY (10/14/2010)(readMedia)-- The 2 ½ million member New York State AFL-CIO today announced the endorsement of Congressman Mike McMahon in the 13th Congressional District, along with plans for a massive Get-Out-The-Vote initiative on his behalf.

Denis Hughes, President of the New York State AFL-CIO stated, "The New York State AFL-CIO is pleased to announce its endorsement of Congressman Mike McMahon for re-election. I am confident Congressman McMahon will continue to fight for the issues important to working men and women. As such, we are coordinating a massive member-to-member grassroots initiative in support of his campaign.

"Throughout his career in public service, Congressman McMahon has been a leader in the fight to protect the needs, concerns and dignity of working people. His re-election is vital to the future prosperity of our country. As such, the New York State AFL-CIO will coordinate a comprehensive Get-Out-The-Vote effort, including mailings to members, worksite flyers and phone bank operations. In addition, labor will implement its "labor to neighbor" program, where union members visit other union members in the district to discuss a particular race," said Hughes.

Upon receiving the endorsement, Congressman McMahon stated, "I am thrilled to receive the support of the New York State AFL-CIO. Throughout my time on the New York City Council and continuing when I went to Congress, I have always fought for the needs of our hard-working families in Staten Island and Brooklyn. I have supported countless measures to create jobs by rebuilding our aging infrastructure, provide credit to our small businesses and protect critical public services. I also made it a priority to get our 9/11 first responders and rebuilders the health care they deserve, and am proud to say that the Zadroga 9/11 Health Care bill, which I was an original sponsor of, finally passed the House. These are the types of causes I have championed and will continue to champion in the 112th Congress. I am proud to stand with our friends from labor as we keep moving forward to victory on November 2nd."

Through Election Day, the labor movement will have hundreds of volunteers working on the Congressman's behalf, and will send out thousands of flyers and mailings.

In fact, the New York State AFL-CIO and New York City Central Labor Council will be coordinating a Get-Out-The-Vote grassroots initiative, called "Labor to Neighbor", in the district each weekend through Election Day. These events will have hundreds of union volunteers visiting the homes of other union members.

The New York State AFL-CIO represents approximately 70,000 union members in the 13th Congressional District.
