New York State AFL-CIO Endorses Gustavo Rivera for State Senate

ALBANY, NY (08/18/2010)(readMedia)-- On August 16th at its biennial political convention, more than 400 delegates representing local unions, labor councils and area labor federations throughout the state voted to endorse Gustavo Rivera in the 33rd State Senate district.

New York State AFL-CIO President Denis Hughes stated, "The New York State AFL-CIO is pleased to announce its endorsement of Gustavo Rivera."

"Gustavo has reached out to local unions in his district, and has shown a keen awareness and understanding of the issues, needs and concerns of working men and women. As a result of his efforts, he has received substantial support within the local labor movement in the 33rd Senate District, and has the full support of the organized labor movement in this state moving forward."

"As a former member of PSC-CUNY, and as a current member of the Adjunct Faculty Union at Pace University, Gustavo has spent his entire career working to further the cause of working men and women. I am confident he will be a strong advocate for them as Senator," said Hughes.

Upon receiving the endorsement, Gustavo Rivera stated, "No one fights harder for the working men and women of New York than the AFL-CIO. As a former union organizer, I know the critical role that labor has played in building the middle class and creating good jobs. Every day I talk to union members in my district who are sick and tired of the status quo from our elected officials and want to know how we can turn our economy around and create jobs. I am tremendously proud to have the AFL-CIO's support for my campaign and together I know we can clean up Albany and put working families first."

The New York State AFL-CIO represents approximately 21,000 union members in the 33rd State Senate District.
