New York State Division of Veterans' Affairs Releases 2009 Annual Report

ALBANY, NY (03/25/2010)(readMedia)-- James D. McDonough, Jr., Director of the New York State Division of Veterans' Affairs today released the Division's 2009 Annual Report. The report, which is separated into 6 sections, highlights the accomplishments and improvements made in calendar year 2009 to address the needs of New York's veterans and their families.

"2009 presented many challenges and opportunities for the Division to meet the ongoing needs of New York's veterans and their families, and in all cases, I am pleased to report the Division made substantial gains and dramatically increased the amount of federal funds secured for New York's veterans and their families." stated Jim McDonough, Director of the Division of Veteran's Affairs. McDonough added, "In 2009, the Division was able to increase the service network by establishing new service points in VA facilities and college campuses selectively across New York State. New service locations include Paul Smith's College, the Syracuse VA Medical Center, Adirondack Community College, Empire State College and the Niagara Falls Community Based Outpatient Clinic."

Also, McDonough praised Governor David A. Paterson and the State Legislature for increasing funds to local Veteran Service Agencies by 42%. This increased investment demonstrates New York's commitment to help local governments serve our veterans and their families.

The report highlights the significant increase in federal veterans' benefits collected on behalf of New York's veterans and their families. In 2009, the Division was responsible for $108,224,534 worth of new and recurring benefits underwritten by the US Department of Veterans Affairs. This amount is over $26 million more than what was collected in 2008 and $41 million more than in 2007.

Additionally in 2009, the Division undertook significant efforts to increase its outreach to veterans and their families by expanding our services to college campuses and sites of direct health care. We also realized the need to expand our efforts to assist those veterans who were struggling with issues surrounding healthcare, education, employment and financial security. "We continue to explore new ways to reach all generations of veterans." said Division of Veterans' Affairs Director James D. McDonough, Jr.

The year ahead will present additional opportunities and challenges for the Division. We will continue to push services to where veterans require them; in 2010 the Division will continue to increase and expand services, with plans to open a service point in Harlem, and other selective points across New York State. The Division will also continue to expand its use of technology to provide the finest veterans benefit counseling in the United States.

Celebrating 65 years of dedicated service to veterans and their families, the New York State Division of Veterans' Affairs was created in 1945 as part of the Executive Department with the task of assisting World War II service men and women with readjustment from the military to civilian life. We serve all generations of veterans in assisting them and their families to secure their earned benefits.
