ALBANY, NY (08/19/2010)(readMedia)-- The New York State Park Police, in cooperation with the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee and law enforcement organizations throughout New York State, will be engaged in a targeted enforcement campaign to detect and arrest impaired drivers.
"New York STOP-DWI Crackdown – Over the Limit, Under Arrest" will target drunk or drug impaired drivers during the period from August 20th through Labor Day, September 6th. State Park Police officers will be using sobriety checkpoints, dedicated patrols and saturation patrols to detect impaired drivers.
Commissioner Carol Ash reminded all motorists about the danger of drunken or impaired driving. "Motorists must recognize how dangerous it is to operate a vehicle while intoxicated or impaired by drugs – particularly at huge events or on crowded roads. Tens of thousands of spectators attend events within State Parks and our roadways and parking fields are filled to capacity with vehicles and pedestrians. The State Park Police will be vigilant for drivers who threaten the safety of others. If you intend to visit our beautiful park system, please don't drink and drive."
Chief Richard O'Donnell, Director of Law Enforcement for New York State Parks urged motorists to take precautions. "If you intend to drink – make arrangements with a sober person to serve as your designated driver. Plan ahead and use good judgment."
