Speak Up and Speak Out for Birth Control
ALBANY, NY (11/08/2007)(readMedia)-- The NYU Chapter of the National Organization for Women will Speak Up! Speak Out! about the current birth control crisis for poor and young women in New York State.
Who: New York University-National Organization for Women (NYU-NOW)
What: Birth Control Crisis Rally
When: Date: Monday, November 12, 2007 Time: 4:45 pm - 6:00 pm
Where: Location: Washington Square Park, New York City
Why: When the Deficit Reduction Act (passed by Congress in 2005) took effect this year, students and low-income women were left out. College health centers and safety-net providers had previously been able to purchase birth control from drug companies at an extremely discounted rate. But now this is not an option. Affordable birth control has become out of reach for many college women. The cost of a pack of birth control on some New York campuses has risen from $5 to nearly $50 a month!
Advocates will gather at Send a strong message to Congress to restore access to affordable birth control.
Partial List of Speakers: U.S. Representative Joseph Crowley NYC Council Speaker Christine Quinn Joan Malin, PP of New York City Meena Shah, NYU Voices for Choice
