New Yorkers on Fracking: Potential Benefits Not Worth the Risk

ALBANY, NY (06/01/2012)(readMedia)-- In response to a recently released report on 2010, 2011, and 2012 Empire State Polls by the Cornell University Survey Research Institute regarding New Yorkers' attitudes about industrial gas drilling by means of "fracking," the New York Water Rangers released the following statement:

"By nearly two to one, New Yorkers across the state agree--the risk of water contamination outweighs the potential economic benefits of fracking. Upstate and Downstate, most participants in the poll agree that fracking will have no impact or even worsen their quality of life. New Yorkers also agree that local government should take the lead in gas development in our community--not outside interests.

The Water Rangers continue to call on Governor Cuomo and his Department of Environmental Conservation to listen to New Yorkers and let science and strong protection of public health and the environment--not industry propaganda--determine if fracking should be permitted in the Empire State."
