OASAS Announces Expanded Toll Free Information and Helpline

ALBANY, NY (07/17/2007)(readMedia)-- State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) Commissioner Karen M. Carpenter-Palumbo today announced that OASAS has expanded its existing toll free information and helpline (1-800-522-5353) to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“One of the main priorities of Governor Spitzer’s “patients first” strategy is to enhance access to health care for all New Yorkers,” said Commissioner Carpenter-Palumbo. “Now, anytime day or night, all New Yorkers can be referred to the appropriate program, while also receiving assistance in finding services for other related concerns, such as housing and mental health. In addition, families and friends of individuals in need of treatment can call the helpline to inquire about help for their loved ones."

OASAS operates the most comprehensive network of chemical dependence prevention, treatment and recovery services anywhere in the nation. On any given day, 110,000 New Yorkers are served by an OASAS-licensed program. In cooperation with other state agencies, local governments, providers and communities, OASAS works to ensure that a full range of accessible and cost-effective prevention, treatment and recovery services are available statewide.

“This is an unprecedented milestone in the OASAS service delivery system, and we will continue to make improvements to enhance our capabilities as One OASAS to improve the lives of all New Yorkers,” Commissioner Carpenter-Palumbo said.
