ALBANY, NY (06/16/2011)(readMedia)-- New York residents don't need a shovel this summer to help plant trees for their state park system. With the ease of a mouse click, visitors to www.odwalla.com/plantatree can designate a tree to be planted in New York State through the Odwalla Plant a Tree program – a partnership to support the environment and help with important reforestation and planting initiatives.
From June 1 through August 31, 2011, each individual can plant a tree by simply visiting www.odwalla.com/plantatree and clicking on New York. No contribution is required.
Odwalla is donating $100,000 worth of trees to be planted across the country through the program. Each state's tree allotment is determined by where website visitors choose to plant trees. In New York, the trees will be used for a variety of planting initiatives for parks and historic sites. The species of trees donated will vary by region and will be planted in fall 2011 and early 2012.
"Our partnership with Odwalla and its Plant a Tree program has been valuable to our restoration and beautification efforts in New York State Parks," said Rose Harvey, Commissioner of the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. "We encourage people who love their parks to actively participate and help ensure our state parks receive the maximum number of trees."
Since its inception in 2008, the Odwalla Plant a Tree program has donated $350,000 worth of trees nationwide. The collaboration between Odwalla and New York State Parks is in its fourth year and has included the web-based Plant a Tree program in the Saratoga-Capital region with plantings along the iconic Avenue of the Pines at the national historic landmark Saratoga Spa State Park, as well as support of select park events and activities across several regions in the state.
The program is the latest 2011 initiative by Odwalla to support the environment. Odwalla recently transitioned all of its single-serve bottles to PlantBottle™ packaging, made from up to 100 percent plant-based materials, and also completed the installation of Bloom Energy fuel cell technology at its Dinuba, CA packaging facility, which reduces the plant's carbon footprint by an estimated 35 percent.
