Oglethorpe University freshman goalkeeper Ulises Rodriguez earned Southern Athletic Association Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week honors from the league office on Monday after his performance in the Stormy Petrels' 4-0 win over Berry College---a victory that secured the team's fifth straight outright SAA regular season title. It served as the second time Rodriguez received the honor in 2019.
A Business Administation major, Rodriguez is from Troy, NJ and a graduate of Saint Peter's Preparatory School.
Rodriguez recorded five saves over the course of the game, including four in the first half with the score either 0-0 or 1-0. He played for 81 minutes of what became the Petrels' fifth clean sheet of the season, and he picked up his eighth win of the year. He currently sits in second place in the SAA with a 0.66 goals-against average and an .829 save percentage. Rodriguez also is third in the conference with three clean sheets.
He and the rest of the top-seeded Petrels will host eighth-seeded Hendrix College on Saturday afternoon in the first round of the SAA playoffs at the Oglethorpe Track and Field. If they win that game, Oglethorpe will host the final two rounds of the SAA Men's Soccer Championship the following weekend.
