Devin Johnston, recipient of Olivet Nazarene University's 2013 Maggie Sloan Crawford Award

BOURBONNAIS, IL (05/08/2013)(readMedia)-- During Olivet Nazarene University's 100th annual traditional undergraduate Commencement ceremony Saturday, May 4, 2013, Devin Johnston of Bloomingdale was honored with the Maggie Sloan Crawford Award for outstanding female graduate. She is the daughter of Dennis and Diane Johnston.

While at Olivet, Johnston - a math education major - was named to the dean's list every semester. She was a member of Pi Mu Epsilon, the mathematics honor society, as well as the Student Education Association (SEA) and the Best Buddies outreach ministry.

As both a soccer player and a basketball player for the Olivet Tigers, she received many awards, including being named as a NAIA and NCCAA Scholar-Athlete. She served as a leader for Olivet's Fellowship of Christian Athletes. In 2010, she joined the soccer team on a two-week mission trip to Kenya, Africa.

"Devin is a young woman with a servant's heart," said Dr. Dale Hathaway, mathematics professor and chair of the Department of Mathematics. "She has successfully balanced two intercollegiate sports, a demanding major and service to others while she has been at Olivet."

"Devin is the type of athlete every coach dreams about coaching," said Lauren Stamatis, head coach for Tigerball (Olivet's women's basketball program). "She works hard every play in practice and in games and has a great attitude, regardless of the circumstances. Off the court, Devin is an absolute joy to be around. She is engaging, caring, personable and seeks after Jesus wholeheartedly. We were blessed to have her as a part of our team at Olivet."

Each year, the Maggie Sloan Crawford Award –– named after Olivet's first graduate - is given to students who exemplify the highest standard of excellence in character, scholarship achievement and contribution to extracurricular activities.

Olivet Nazarene University is an accredited Christian, liberal arts university offering more than 100 areas of undergraduate and graduate study, including the Doctor of Education in ethical leadership.
