ALBANY, NY (04/02/2009)(readMedia)-- Hoffman Warnick LLC (HW), an intellectual property law firm based in Albany, NY, has released the Tech Valley Patent Indices for First Quarter 2009. The "Tech Valley Patent Indices" include data for: the Capital Region (Albany, Schenectady, Saratoga and Rensselaer counties), Tech Valley, Tech Valley without IBM and GE, and the Capital Region without GE.

With regard to the first quarter, "it's no surprise to those who live here, but the number of issued patents to Capital Region residents excluding GE tied an all time record in the first quarter at 107," stated Spencer Warnick, partner at Hoffman Warnick. In addition, the Tech Valley Patent Index was just short (7) from an all time high. Warnick added that: "these numbers are fantastic considering the national number is down significantly compared to last quarter."

The "Patent of the Quarter" is chosen to illustrate firsthand the creativity of Tech Valley inventors. This quarter, the POQ is awarded to: US Patent No. 7478570 issued to Zahid "Zack" Mian, William "Bill" Peabody, Jeremy Mullaney and Robert MacAllister for "Wheel Measurement Systems and Methods." The patent issued January 20, 2009. The patent is assigned to International Electronic Machines Inc., which is a client of Hoffman Warnick.
