Operation Enduring Freedom Letter to the Editor

SPRINGFIELD, IL (09/30/2010)(readMedia)-- October 7, 2010

Letter to the Editor:

Operation Enduring Freedom began when U.S. Armed Forces entered Afghanistan on Oct. 7, 2001 in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks on American soil. Since then, brave men and women have fought to cease terrorist activities throughout Afghanistan and the world. Today, as we remember the nine-year anniversary of OEF, I reflect not only on the accomplishments of the Illinois Soldiers and Airmen, but remember the ones we have lost.

The Illinois National Guard first deployed troops in January of 2002 in support of OEF and suffered our first casualty, Staff Sgt. Jacob Frazier of the 182nd Airlift Wing based in Peoria, March 29, 2003. Since the beginning of operations in Afghanistan, the Illinois National Guard has lost 19 servicemembers, 18 from the 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team in 2008 and 2009. Today we have members from two Illinois Air National Guard Wings and two Illinois Army National Guard units deployed to Afghanistan.

Beginning in 2003, Illinois has had a liaison team deployed with a Polish brigade in Afghanistan. In addition, this following year we will deploy an Agricultural Development team there.

Since the beginning of OEF, the Illinois National Guard has deployed forces to counter terrorists and those that support them. Provincial reconstruction teams have rebuilt infrastructure to include roads, bridges and schools. Airmen have provided cargo, assisted during floods and provided food and water to refugees.

As we look back at the progress in Afghanistan, we need to remember the sacrifices of those who have served, and who are serving there and around the world. On this anniversary, let's take the time to thank the Soldiers, Airmen and their families for the sacrifices they have made to keep us safe.

.

Sincerely,

WILLIAM L. ENYART

Major General, IL ARNG
