PA Turnpike Travel Restrictions Apply to all Motorists in SE PA

UPDATE: Speed limit reduced to 45 miles per hour until further notice.

KING OF PRUSSIA, PA (12/27/2010)(readMedia)-- The Pennsylvania Turnpike continues to operate under a Weather Emergency and the following restrictions apply to all travelers. Due to high winds and drifting snow, speed limits continue to be reduced to 45 miles per hour on the PA Turnpike and Northeastern Extension. Travel restrictions will remain in effect until further notice between Downingtown #312 and the Delaware River Bridge #359 on Interstates 76 and 276, and between Mid-County #20 and Clarks Summit #131 on Interstate 476.

Emergency crews are reporting numerous accidents due to hazardous road conditions caused by strong winds and recurring snow drifts between the Hickory Run Service Plaza (milepost A86) and Pocono Interchange (Exit #95) on the Turnpike's Northeastern Extension (I-476). Turnpike crews will continue to work on the roadway in this area and motorists should use extreme caution when traveling between the Lehigh Tunnel and the Pocono Interchange.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and State Police caution motorists to stay alert for slower than normal traffic and Turnpike crews treating the roadways and interchange ramps. Motorists are urged to obey the speed limits, watch for ice and drifting snow and allow plenty of space when driving near plow trucks. In addition, all abandoned vehicles are being removed from the shoulder to allow crews to clear snow and ice.

Motorists are encouraged to plan travel accordingly. For emergencies, dial *11 on your mobile phone.
