BROOKLYN, NY (02/07/2024) (readMedia)-- POSTPONED. In response to yesterday's misguided rejection by the New York City Council Land Use Committee of a vital housing project in Crown Heights, a coalition of community members, faith leaders, and housing advocates is holding a press conference today to urge Council Members to approve the project. On Thursday, the City Council will vote on the proposed rezoning of 962 Pacific Street, a long-vacant lot which promises to deliver deeply affordable housing and an early childhood care center. Community members have consistently supported the project from its inception, testifying at public hearings and sending letters of support to highlight the community's desperate need for more affordable housing options and community benefits.
Given the crisis faced by New York, affordable housing should not be told to "wait in line." The Land Use Commitee's rejection of 962 Pacific was made purely on the grounds of a technicality, fully ignoring its substance, including the percentage and depth of affordability which go further than mandatory City guidelines and further than the proposed Atlantic Avenue Mixed-Use Plan.
