HARRISBURG, PA (02/21/2011)(readMedia)-- Heavy snowfall along the western portion of the Pennsylvania Turnpike is causing challenging travel conditions, so the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has implemented a reduced speed limit of 45 mph beginning immediately. The restriction applies to both eastbound and westbound traffic on the 91-mile stretch of Pennsylvania Turnpike from the Ohio line east to the Donegal Interchange (Exit # 91).
The Turnpike's snow-removal teams are actively plowing and salting throughout the region.
The Turnpike's Traffic Operations Center continues to monitor weather across the system. The storm front is moving eastward, and the Pa. Turnpike could implement the reduced speed limit east of the Donegal Interchange as needed. If conditions warrant, trucks could be restricted to the right lane only in certain areas as well.
Current forecasts call for snow to blanket much of the Turnpike system statewide by late this evening, with snowfall continuing through tomorrow morning in some areas.
