Pa. Turnpike Speed Limits Reduced to 45 Miles per Hour in Most Areas

Travel restrictions implemented due to low visibility caused by snowfall.

HARRISBURG, PA (01/26/2011)(readMedia)-- The rate of snowfall on much of the Pennsylvania Turnpike system has led to low-visibility conditions for motorists, so the Turnpike Commission has implemented a reduced speed limit of 45 mph for all vehicles on most of the system -- 322 miles in all.

Speed limits are now reduced on the Turnpike mainline from the Donegal Interchange (Exit #91) east to New Jersey on I-76 and I-276 and on the Turnpike's Northeastern Extension between Mid-County (Exit #20) and Mahoning Valley (Exit #74) on I-476.

In addition, all abandoned vehicles are immediately being removed from the shoulder to allow crews to clear snow and ice.

The Turnpike's snow-removal teams are actively plowing and salting throughout the affected regions, and the roadway is presently wet or partially snow covered in most areas.

The Turnpike's Traffic Operations Center continues to monitor weather across the system. If conditions improve, the restrictions will be lifted at the suitable time. If conditions deteriorate, the restrictions could be extended and other winter-safety measures implemented.
