Pararescue Jumper Rodeo Underway at 106th Rescue Wing This Week

Event tests the skills of Airmen trained to rescue downed flyers.

WESTHAMPTON BEACH, NY (09/17/2012)(readMedia)-- Starting today and running through Friday, Sept. 21, the New York Air National Guard's 106th Rescue Wing will be hosting pararescue teams from across the nation for the bi-annual PJ Rodeo Competition.

PJ Stands for Pararescue Jumper, the specialists trained to jump into water or hostile terrain to retrieve downed Airmen.

The weeklong competition simulates real world scenarios testing the core skill sets of each rescue team.

Event scenarios include Tactical Combat Casualty Care, Military Free-fall and Static-line parachuting Operations, Tactical Carbine and Pistol marksmanship, Zodiac Boat Operations, Maritime Navigation and High Angle / Confined-Space Rescue Operations. The competition works to foster teamwork, and esprit de corps among the Guardian Angels.

"Teams have the opportunity to demonstrate their proficiency and expertise during this grueling week of competition, testing their abilities and honing their skills. This is a great venue for them to share lessons learned from real world combat experiences and review each other's tactical techniques and procedures" said Senior Master Sergeant Jeff Baker, a Pararescueman assigned to the 103rd Rescue Squadron.

Event venues are weather dependent and will occur at various 106th Rescue Wing training locations.
