Pharmacy Student Researches Home Care for Frail Patients

A team that included Cedarville University pharmacy student Grace Hong earned high marks at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Hacking Medicine Grand Hack in April.

Hong, a first-year Doctor of Pharmacy student from Powell, Ohio, and her team were tasked with finding new ways to use medical data to improve the health care experience. They addressed the question of home-based care for elderly, frail patients. Hong noted that these patients stay in hospitals for extended periods of time, even after recovering from procedures, because they can't safely go home and perform necessary daily routines. Long-term custodial care is not often covered by insurance. Hospitals, insurance companies and patients' families bear the cost of these extended hospital stays.
