NEW YORK, NY (11/05/2025) (readMedia)-- Last night, state Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani won the New York City mayoral election, earning more than 50% of the vote.
Phoenix House CEO and President Ann-Marie Foster, a member of the NYSBA Task Force on Opioid Addiction, issued the following statement in response:
"Phoenix House congratulates Zohran Mamdani on his election as Mayor of New York City. This is a pivotal moment for our city as the federal government falters. Thousands of New Yorkers in recovery remain under threat of losing their health insurance and many already lost their benefits. As the Assemblymember for our Long Island City facility, one of the largest residential treatment programs in the city, Mr. Mamdani understood then the urgent need for programs like ours that center the whole person. We look forward to continuing that partnership with the new administration to address the substance use and mental health challenges facing New Yorkers across all five boroughs. Because together, we can build a pathway to recovery for all."
In New York City, approximately 207,000 individuals report receiving substance use treatment, and statewide, nearly 2.8 million individuals aged 12 and older struggled with substance use disorders (SUDs) in the past year. But today, New York City is home to only two overdose prevention centers, while up to 90,000 residents report an unmet need for substance use treatment, according to the DOHMH.
