Phoenix House Tackles Opioid Safety with DisposeRx Medication Disposal Education and At-Home Disposal Packets

NEW YORK, NY (11/29/2022) (readMedia)-- More than 100,000 Americans die each year from drug overdose according to the latest stats from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). To save lives and prevent drug misuse, Phoenix House is launching a campaign to educate the public about the importance of medication disposal and offer DisposeRx packets-a simple at-home disposal solution.

DisposeRX is a safe drug disposal solution for unused medication such as non-controlled, controlled substances, and narcotics. The packets, along with education materials, are being distributed to the community at local events, and were distributed at DEA National Prescription Drug Take Back Day events across New York City. Packets are also available for anyone who wants one at Phoenix House's Brooklyn Community Recovery Center.

"The addiction epidemic has taken too many lives, and unfortunately, overdose rates continue to rise. At Phoenix House we provide substance use disorder and mental health treatment, and offer harm reduction solutions. But in order to beat the epidemic, we have to attack it from every side. Promoting safe medication disposal is another way for us to do our part to reduce drug misuse and accidental overdose deaths," said Ann-Marie Foster, President and CEO of Phoenix Houses of New York and Long Island.

DisposeRx packets contain a blend of materials that neutralize the effects of medications and make them unusable. To use, simply add water and the packet contents to medication in its prescription vial or bottle and shake for 30 seconds. The active ingredient in the medication is chemically and physically sequestered in a polymer gel made from FDA-approved materials. Patients can use the patented product with pills, tablets, capsules, liquids and powders and then throw away the vial in the household trash.
