How do young women use the power of their intellect and the energy of their passion to make positive change in today’s world?

On September 27, Emma Willard School will host a symposium, “Women, Power, and Possibility,” that will explore this question. The symposium, the second in a series, will consist of a panel of young women already making their mark around the globe. They will examine the issues and contemplate the many possibilities that emerge when women translate their beliefs into action with commitment and conviction.

Katherine Chon will serve as a panelist for the symposium. She partnered with Derek Ellerman in 2002 to co-found Polaris Project. Polaris Project is committed to combating human trafficking and modern-day slavery, and to strengthening the anti-trafficking movement through a comprehensive approach. Polaris Project's vision is for a world without slavery. Named after the North Star that guided slaves towards freedom along the Underground Railroad, Polaris Project has been providing a comprehensive and community-based approach to combating human trafficking and modern-day slavery since 2002. Polaris Project is one of the few organizations working to serve both U.S. citizen and foreign national victims of human trafficking. Programs operate at international, national, and local levels through offices in Washington, DC; Newark, NJ; Denver, CO; and Tokyo, Japan. From the beginning, Katherine Chon has been involved in stewarding all aspects of Polaris Project’s growth, operations, and programs. She has worked closely with survivors of labor and sex trafficking; has testified before Congress; provided training and technical assistance to law enforcement, service providers, shelters, and community groups in the US; and has provided consultation to dozens of foreign government delegations, businesses, investors, universities, and non-government organizations.
