NASHUA, N.H. (04/10/2012)(readMedia)-- While it is never one to shy away from faster acceleration, luxury automaker Porsche has turned to clean-diesel technology to also improve the fuel efficiency of its newest Cayenne model. Porsche pulled the wraps off of its 2013 Porsche Cayenne Diesel sport utility at the 2012 New York International Auto Show last week, unveiling what will become the first diesel-powered Porsche to be sold in the U.S. market.
When it arrives at Porsche dealerships in September, the 2013 Porsche Cayenne Diesel is expected by the automaker to offer a best-in-class fuel economy of 28 mpg on the highway. While similar fuel efficiency in a gas engine might restrict performance, Porsche's 3.0-liter V6 turbo diesel engine will deliver an impressive 406 pound-feet of torque to help the Cayenne Diesel reach 0 - 60 mph in 7.2 seconds. That is 0.2 seconds faster than the gas-powered Cayenne with the same eight-speed automatic transmission.
"The Cayenne Diesel's large amount of low-end torque means you'll get more response when you step on the pedal and will have an easier time towing gear to your vacation destination this summer." said Larry Bedell, general manager of New Hampshire Porsche dealer Porsche of Nashua. "Also, with the fuel efficiency of diesel technology, those benefits come along with five more miles per gallon compared to the similarly equipped gas-powered model."
Considering that it is Porsche's first diesel model in the United States, the Cayenne Diesel comes equipped with a safeguard to prevent drivers or their passengers from accidentally filling up with gas by habit. A mechanical component in the fuel tank filler neck only opens the locking mechanism when a larger-diameter diesel fuel pump nozzle is inserted. When Cayenne Diesel drivers do refill with the right fuel, they'll be able to travel for up to 740 miles on a single tank, meaning fewer stops between fill-ups.
Another new Porsche, the next-generation Boxster, also made an appearance in New York last week following its global debut in Geneva in March. With a larger platform, the 2013 Porsche Boxster now affords occupants more interior space when the new fully electric top is closed. The Porsche convertible also received a style upgrade complete with new 20-inch wheels and square-shaped headlights influenced by the upcoming Porsche 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid supercar.
The base 2013 Porsche Boxster features a new flat-six direct-injection engine producing 265 horsepower, which is good for 10 more horsepower than the larger outgoing engine. When equipped with the optional seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission, those models can reach 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, while the 315-horsepower Boxster S speeds up that time to 4.7 seconds. Porsche expects that its lighter, faster and more powerful new Boxster will also be roughly 15 percent more fuel efficient than the previous generation when it arrives at dealerships in the early summer.
"Drop-tops are favorites of summer drivers, and the new Boxster will be here just in time for Porsche fans to enjoy the sun," added Bedell. "Whether they're driving up to Lake Winnipesaukee or south to the Cape, local Boxster owners will be getting around with more power, better fuel efficiency and unparalleled style."
