Proposition for November Ballot

NEW YORK, NY (10/20/2014)(readMedia)-- Common Cause NY and the Vote No on Prop 1 campaign are writing to ask for your editorial board's support of our opposition to Proposal 1, a constitutional amendment before the voters November 4th.

Prop 1 is a controversial referendum revising redistricting across New York. If passed, the amendment will create a new system for drawing legislative lines in the state that will lock partisan political gamesmanship into our state electoral maps for decades to come. Editorial Boards across the state agree that this proposal is nothing more than a power play by party leaders in Albany under the guise of reform.

The Vote No on Prop 1 position has been endorced by elected officials such as Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, Congressman Jerrold Nadler and Congresswoman Nita Lowey, State Senators Liz Kruger and Cecilia Tkaczyk. We have recieved the support of organizations like the Partnership for the Public Good and the MinKwon Center for Community Action, the NAACP, LatinoJustice, Make the Road NY, Citizen Action, NY Communities for Change; from unions such as 32 BJ, DC 37, CWA local 1180 and the Troy Area Labor Council; and by the editorial boards of the Auburn Citizen, the Watertown Daily Times, the New York Times, Newsday, the Syracuse Post-Standard, and the Albany Times Union.
