PurplCouch Re-frames Divorce from 'Failed Marriage' Into 'Fresh Start'

(Vergennes, VT.) - Sarah Lyman is reshaping the stigma of divorce one couch at a time.

In 2019, the CDC reported more than 2,000 divorces each day; and that was before the pandemic exacerbated stress on couples and families. Yet, despite how commonplace divorce has become, there is still an unspoken stigma surrounding it.

When individuals go through other kinds of life altering changes, community support is common. Think of weddings, births, and graduations, where friends and family "shower" one another with gifts and parties. Even in times of grief, loved ones gather in mourning, organize meal trains, and establish fundraisers. That same level of support is lacking for individuals going through a divorce.

That's what Sarah Lyman has been able to provide. Divorce requires not only emotional support, but accurate information to make legal, financial, and custodial decisions that will have a lifelong impact.

Sarah Lyman announces the release of her creation, PurplCouch, an online, on-demand, divorce course. Sarah, a divorcee herself, found the existing resources overwhelming and difficult to navigate. And she realized that the true healing after divorce comes when one shifts the focus from what failed to what new opportunities lie ahead.

The series of on-demand videos allows clients on their divorce journey anywhere in the U.S. to hear from five professionals across the legal, financial, and emotional spectrum to help navigate this big life change. Unlike other divorce resources, PurplCouch is designed for the person on the divorce journey and their ally. The registration includes two logins so each participant can watch at their own pace and discuss it with one another afterwards, even if they're across the country.

The PurplCouch course is divided into four chapters titled Law, Money, Kids, and Thrive. Videos feature advice directly from an attorney, financial advisor, child psychologist, tax preparer, and a couples and family therapist.

"People expect me to offer my condolences when they tell me their marriage is ending," says Lyman. "And I do - divorce can be extremely painful and difficult. But after going through this process myself, I also see the possibilities in moving beyond a relationship that no longer works. I always add, 'Congratulations on your fresh start.'"

Lyman, a communications professional, produced the on-demand videos and balances practical tips and resources with a bit of levity and her own personal stories. She's even curated a Spotify playlist, Tunes to Go with Your Divorce.

"There are countless wedding magazines and baby blogs, but where's the community support around divorce?" Lyman asks. "Divorce is a time when individuals need both emotional support and solid guidance around finances, legal planning, and mental health; but there hasn't been a platform to share either. That's why I created PurplCouch."

The company name was inspired by Lyman's own divorce journey. When furnishing her new apartment after separating from her husband, she suddenly realized she didn't need anyone else's input on the furniture, and bought a purple velour couch––and named her business after it.

"PurplCouch is a symbol of the empowerment we get when we look forward and write the next chapter of our lives."
