METROPOLIS, IL (05/12/2011)(readMedia)-- Illinois Governor Pat Quinn, Maj. Gen. William L. Enyart of Belleville, the Adjutant General of the Illinois National Guard and Metropolis Mayor Billy McDaniel spoke at a press conference about the damage caused by flooding of the Ohio River.

A series of storms have battered several southern Illinois counties and prompted the activation of approximately 450 National Guardsmen. Evacuations took place in towns and cities near the Ohio River after water reached dangerously high levels, even breaching some levees.

Illinois National Guard troops were activated under the Illinois National Guard and local officials to help areas affected by the flooding. Metropolis received the support of both Illinois National Guard troops and local volunteers working to protect the city as waters rose.
