REMINDER ADVISORY: Common Cause/NY to Release Report on State of Voting Rights in New York
Public Advocate Letitia James, other civic organizations to join call for voting reforms
NEW YORK, NY (01/13/2017)(readMedia)-- Common Cause New York will announce findings from their groundbreaking new report on election administration and voting laws in New York State. The report examines how well New York State has performed in implementing the bi-partisan Presidential Commission on Election Administration's nineteen recommendations to improve voting rights. Additionally, the report reviews election law-related state legislation and suggests reforms New York State can implement to modernize and streamline their voting system.
Common Cause New York's report has been endorsed by various civil rights and civic organizations, including The Black Institute, Cchaya CDC, the MinKwon Center for Community Action and the New York Immigration Coalition.
The report comes after yet another election cycle where voters across the state were alienated due to restrictions on voter registration, long lines at polling locations, and antiquated systems that caused delays. The findings of the report are also announced in coordination with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday. Dr. King was instrumental in the formation of the Voting Rights Act.
