REVISED: Common Cause/NY Calls on State Lawmakers Elected to NYC Council to Step Down from Legislature

Put public interest before self-interest

NEW YORK, NY (09/13/2017) (readMedia)-- Last night, three current state lawmakers won election to the NYC Council: Assemblymembers Francisco Moya and Mark Gjonaj, and Senator Ruben Diaz Sr.

In response, Susan Lerner, Executive Director of Common Cause/NY made the following statement:

"The three state lawmakers who won election to the New York City Council yesterday should step down immediately from their posts to allow candidates to emerge, and voters to select them in the upcoming November 7th election. If they don't, the Governor will be forced to call a special election in 2018, or let three seats lie vacant for an entire legislative session until the Congressional primaries in June. Either way that's a bad deal for their constituents. Francisco Moya, Mark Gjonaj, and Ruben Diaz Sr., must put the public interest ahead of their own self-interest and resign from the Legislature immediately."
