Clarkson University graduate students Robert Arcate and Sean Willis developed a system that enables autonomous vehicles to safely navigate construction zones by detecting traffic cones, lane shifts, and road closures in real time and generating alternate routes. Their research, which earned fourth place at the 2026 Designs for Safety Competition during the World Traffic Safety Symposium, explores practical ways to improve roadway safety and autonomous vehicle reliability in changing traffic environments.
