Restoration of Adobe Churches First Topic of Cultural Enrichment Series

LOS LUNAS, NM (09/14/2012)(readMedia)-- Restoration and preservation of historic adobe churches is the topic of the first event in the Fall 2012 UNM-Valencia Cultural Enrichment Series.

Entitled "Adobe Churches: History, Preservation and Diagnostic Technology," the lecture will be held in the Student-Community Center on Tuesday, Sept. 18th at 1:30 p.m. The event is a fundraiser for the UNM-Valencia Student Scholarship Fund and admission is $10. Students who have a student I.D. will be admitted for free.

Featured at the lecture will be local historian John Taylor, along with Martín Romero, Sustainable Building instructor at UNM-Valencia. Century-old adobe churches are among New Mexico's treasures. Many are in need of restoration if they are to survive.

Taylor will discuss some of the churches that need immediate attention. Romero will discuss his involvement with the current restoration project of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Tomé.

A tour of the church will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 26th, at 5:30 p.m.

The Student-Community Center is located on the south side of the UNM-Valencia Campus near the south parking lot.

Tickets for the Sept. 18th lecture can be purchased in advance or at the door. For more information about the lecture, call 925-8550.
