ALBANY, NY (06/24/2011)(readMedia)-- Carol Thompson, a volunteer and member of Greece Community Federal Credit Union's board of directors, was named a 2011 Outstanding Volunteer by the Credit Union Association of New York at their Annual Meeting and Convention held recently in Lake Placid, N.Y.

The Volunteer of the Year award recognizes individuals who exemplify commitment to a credit union or to the New York credit union movement. Thompson won the award in the asset category of up to $50 million.

"Volunteers like Carol are an essential part of what makes credit unions uniquely able to help members build a better financial future," said William J. Mellin, the Association's president/CEO. "Her contributions are a major reason for the continued safety and soundness of Greece Community Federal Credit Union."

As Greece Community FCU's volunteer marketing director and assistant treasurer, Thompson has demonstrated outstanding commitment and compassion at the credit union. Early last year, the credit union's manager, Susan Raymond, was diagnosed with cancer.

The months that followed were tremendously difficult for Greece Community FCU, and Thompson worked closely with Raymond to provide the support she needed to continue leading the credit union.

Despite challenges and changes, Thompson has remained passionate and committed to the success of Greece Community FCU.

The Credit Union Association of New York has served as the trade association for the state's credit unions for 94 years. New York credit unions have assets of more than $53 billion and serve 4.5 million members. To learn more about the Association, visit www.cuany.org.
