DELHI, NY (02/17/2010)(readMedia)-- Nearly 100 SUNY Delhi students are working with the O'Connor Center for Community Service on a month-long campaign to raise $5,000 to benefit Hope for Haiti, an organization that supports Haitian youth.
"Delhi students selected Hope for Haiti as the focus of their support since the organization has a long reputation for providing assistance to Haitian youth through healthcare and nutrition," said Elizabeth Sova, coordinator for the O'Connor Center. "Since the organization also focuses on education, Delhi students would like to establish an ongoing relationship with Hope of Haiti that will spur more opportunities for them to assist Haitian youth in the months and years to come."
The O'Connor Center for Community Service is currently collaborating with Hope for Haiti to identify a specific school that will directly benefit from the funds raised by Delhi students.
Delhi students have partnered with local organizations, including Kiwanis and the Delhi Fire Department. The College Association at Delhi, Inc. and the Coca Cola Company will also assist Delhi students as they raise funds through events on campus and throughout the Delhi community.
Nearly $500 has already been raised on campus through comedy and talent shows presented by the Student Programming Board and the Black Student Union. Proceeds from an on-going fundraising competition between the residence halls, a bowl-a-thon, ribbon day, and a student Olympics will help reach the campaign goal.
In addition, all proceeds from recycled cans and bottles collected on the Delhi campus throughout the months of February and March will be donated by Coca Cola to the Hope for Haiti campaign. A fund drive will ask students, faculty, staff and members of the community to offer their monetary support. To round off the fundraising efforts, the O'Connor Center for Community Service and the Delhi Kiwanis Club will host a pancake breakfast on Sunday, February 21, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Delhi Fire Hall.
