SUNY Delhi Names Presidential Honors Scholars

DELHI, NY (07/13/2011)(readMedia)-- A total of 13 leading local high school graduates have been named Presidential Scholars at SUNY Delhi this fall by President Candace S. Vancko.

The largest class of Delhi Presidential Scholars to date, these select graduates will enroll in the college's honors program, which is designed to recognize, reward and inspire the best and the brightest local students. Each student will receive a scholarship to cover the cost of full tuition to attend SUNY Delhi.

"I congratulate these local graduates on selecting SUNY Delhi and qualifying to become Presidential Honors Scholars by their outstanding academic records at the high school level," said President Vancko. "More and more local students and parents are recognizing the value of a SUNY Delhi education, making the selection process more competitive than ever."

This year's Presidential Scholars include: Katelyn Bartlett, a teacher education major from Walton Central School; Andrew Davis, a computer information systems major from Walton Central School; Gretchen Holbert, a culinary arts major from Sidney Central School; Samantha Howard, an undeclared major from Delaware Academy; Christina Hall, a general studies major from Delaware Academy; Devon Kaminsky, an undeclared major from Walton Central School; Chyna Ly, a math and science major from Walton Central School; Lauren Marszal, a nursing major from Unatego Central School; Mackenzie Ranc, a nursing major from Oneonta Senior High School; Nicole Starr, a veterinary science technology major from Charlotte Valley Central School; Kacie Walley, a veterinary science technology major from Downsville Central School; Meghan Wallace, an undeclared major from Roxbury Central School; and Kayleigh Ward, a nursing major from Oneonta Senior High School.

SUNY Delhi Presidential Scholars are chosen based on recommendations from high school superintendents in Delaware and Otsego Counties. To be eligible, students must rank within the top 15 percent of their graduating class, earn a Regents Diploma with a minimum average of 88 percent, and submit a 350 to 500 word essay highlighting their extracurricular activities and achievements. Presidential Scholars must maintain a G.P.A. of 3.3 while attending SUNY Delhi to continue their scholarship status.

SUNY Delhi's honors program is designed for students who seek a greater academic challenge given their ability and personal motivation. Qualified students are challenged through specially designed honors courses in the humanities and social sciences, as well as through courses in their major.
