SUNY Delhi Ranks among Top Associated Schools of Construction in Northeast Region Competition

DELHI, NY (11/17/2012)(readMedia)-- SUNY Delhi secured second place in the 23rd Annual Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Region 1 student competition in Morristown, N.J. November 9-10, ranking among the top construction management colleges and universities in the Northeast.

SUNY Delhi competed against six other teams in the design-build category: Roger Williams University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Norwich University, Central Connecticut State University, Polytechnic Institute of New York University, and Pennsylvania College of Technology. The ASC Region 1 student competition was conducted in three categories- design-build, commercial, and heavy-civil-in which a total of 30 teams and 180 students competed.

"In my opinion, design-build is the most rigorous category of the three presented at the ASC competition," said Jared Yando, instructor of Construction Technology and Management at SUNY Delhi. "The judges said it was extremely close in the design-build category, with Roger Williams edging us by just a few points. The judges commended our students on their professionalism and team camaraderie."

Delhi construction management majors James Erwin of East Branch, Michael Hull of Sherburne, Eric Murray of Skaneateles, Tyler Warren of New Windsor, Bret Weller of Adams, and Andrew West of Windsor comprised the Delhi design-build team.

Students were given 15 hours to draft a written bid proposal for a real project being built by the firm sponsoring the contest, Gilbane Building Company. They designed, estimated, scheduled and developed site logistics plans, company profiles, policies, staffing plans and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) score sheets, beginning at 8 a.m. and finishing by 11 p.m. Students were then required to produce a 35 minute PowerPoint presentation by the next morning to "win the job." During the entire period of drafting the proposal, students were not permitted to use the Internet and were not able to consult with faculty. Representatives from Gilbane served as judges for the competition.
