SUNY Potsdam Child Care Center Holds First Family Olympics

POTSDAM, NY (04/07/2011)(readMedia)-- The SUNY Potsdam Child Care Center held its first annual Family Olympics in March. The event was planned as a culminating project by Amber Aksterowicz, an intern from the College's Department of Community Health.

Children and their families participated in an obstacle course designed especially for the children's developmental abilities. Healthy foods were offered for snacks. The Family Olympics was such a success that parents and teachers asked for it to become an annual event.

SUNY Potsdam Child Care Center Inc. is now looking ahead to celebrate the "Week of the Young Child" from April 10 to 16. The theme selected this year by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is "Early Years are Learning Years."

There is a week of fun planned in honor of this event. The school age children will have ice cream sandwiches with SUNY Potsdam President Dr. John F. Schwaller, who will read to the infants, toddlers and preschool children.

Throughout the week, children will have opportunities to learn about worm composting, listen to a former SPCCC student play the steel drums and tell about his stay in Trinidad, and finish off the week by climbing the rock wall in Maxcy Hall.
