SCRANTON, PA (06/14/2013)(readMedia)-- Safia Abulaila of Holmdel, a 2013 summa cum laude graduate of The University of Scranton, received the Excellence in Counseling and Human Services Award from the University at Commencement. Abulaila was recognized for academic excellence and outstanding service alongside 67 other graduates who earned some of the nation's most prestigious honors including Goldwater, Truman and Fulbright scholarships.
Abulaila majored in counseling and human services at the Jesuit university. She is a member of Tau Upsilon Alpha (the national honor society for human services) and Alpha Lamda Delta (the national honor society for first-year students). She was a mentor for The University of Success program and a resident assistant.
Abulaila is enrolled in the combined baccalaureate/master's degree program in community counseling at The University of Scranton. She is planning to participate in an international service program trip to Mexico this summer.
Abulaila is a graduate of Holmdel High School in Holmdel, N.J.
