RAYNHAM, MASS. (07/18/2012)(readMedia)-- Since it went on sale in 2009 for the 2010 model year, the GMC Terrain has not had a better first half of the year at dealerships than it has in 2012. GMC's compact SUV continued to gain momentum with buyers this year, selling 46,602 units from January through June, the most among the brand's utility vehicles.
With sales up 12.7 percent year-to-date compared to the same period last year, the GMC Terrain finished the first half of the year strong. Sales of the small SUV increased 11.5 percent last month over June 2011, with 7,795 vehicles sold. That performance on the sales floor helped GMC sell 201,041 units through the first six months of 2012, a 7.3 percent increase over 2011.
"The GMC Terrain's versatility allows its owners to fulfill a wide range of needs with a single vehicle, and we expect sales to keep increasing as more buyers realize that," said Gary Carter, general sales manager of Mastria Buick GMC Cadillac, a GMC dealer in Massachusetts. "With its flexible cargo solutions and strong towing capabilities, the Terrain is perfect for summer trips with the family. Plus, it can save a lot of money at the gas pump along the way."
Coming standard with a direct-injected 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, the 2012 GMC Terrain returns an impressive 32 mpg on the highway and nets a cruising range of up to 600 miles. For those that need to transport a couple jet skis up to the lake, an optional 264-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 offers a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds that is unsurpassed in the Terrain's class. When 2013 Terrain models go on sale in the third quarter of this year, that engine will be replaced with a new 3.6-liter V6 that churns out 301 horsepower and a 0 - 60 mph time of 6.7 seconds, all while using the same amount of fuel as the outgoing unit.
In addition to that increased capability, Terrain buyers will be able to opt for a heavy dose of luxury when the model's Denali trim debuts for the 2013 model year. Inside, the 2013 GMC Terrain Denali will showcase soft-touch Jet Black leather, while a signature chrome grille will be complemented by satin chrome accents on the exterior. Standard models with the 2.4-liter engine will receive 18-inch wheels; 2013 Terrain models with the 3.6-liter powerplant will be accompanied by 19-inch rims.
Going beyond aesthetics, the upgrades in the Terrain Denali will include the longest list of advanced safety features ever for a GMC vehicle. Among the standard safety systems are forward collision alert and lane departure warning, which use single-camera crash-avoidance technology to warn of potential collisions ahead or while changing lanes. Meanwhile, the Denali-exclusive side blind zone and rear cross traffic alerts use radar to warn of obstacles that are out of the driver's view.
"Buyers often think more about premium materials than safety features when it comes to luxury vehicles, but the Terrain Denali has all the angles covered," noted Carter. "It has the advanced technology to keep its passengers safe and connected, yet it offers unmatched comfort and capability in its class."
