SAVANNAH, GA (10/16/2013)(readMedia)-- Savannah College of Art and Design writing student Erin White was one of the winners in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association's Gold Circle Awards. White won in the category non-fiction column for SCAD Atlanta's student magazine SCAN.
Growing up in Sand Diego, White's pursuit of the arts was encouraged by her parents. She was inspired by the various cultural activities she was exposed to, including museums, book readings, singing, dancing, and theatre. She initially thought writing short stories was a childhood game, until one day while flipping through a Rolling Stone magazine she realized she could make a career out of her creativity.
"Winning this award gives me the opportunity to share my words with people who need them." White said. "I sacrifice my secrets and insecurities to connect with people. I write for the people that feel misunderstood."
For the past 30 years the Gold Circle Awards have recognized superior work by student journalists. The media represented is published in schools or colleges throughout the United States and in overseas schools following an American plan of education. Experienced journalists and expert educators judge the more than 15,000 annual submissions. Award winners receive various certificates of recognition and the honor of being selected by this prestigious program.
The Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) is an international student press association, founded in 1925, whose goal is to unite student journalists and faculty advisers at schools and colleges through educational conferences, idea exchanges, textbooks, critiques and award programs.
