SPARTANBURG, SC (05/19/2010)(readMedia)-- Wofford College senior Sarah Harste received The W. Norman Cochran Award and The Global Citizen Award during Honors Day ceremonies on May 11.
Harste has worked on the college's school newspaper, the Old Gold & Black, for four years. She has been a staff writer, foreign correspondent while she was abroad, section editor and during her senior year was editor-in-chief. The newspaper garnered five awards at this year's South Carolina Press Association awards banquet. Harste has studied abroad in England and Namibia. Parent: Margaret Harste (Gainesville, Ga., 30506).
The academic major awards are made by the faculty to seniors recommended by the major departments on the basis of academic achievement, character and intellectual promise. Some of the awards are named in honor of persons who have made significant contributions to the intellectual life of the college.
The W. Norman Cochran Award is given for outstanding achievement in the field of student publications. The Global Citizen Award is for excellent academic and intercultural performance on a study abroad program, careful reflection upon return, and the integration of skills acquired abroad into the senior year curriculum and future plans.
