ALBANY, NY (03/16/2009)(readMedia)-- Sen. Antoine Thompson and Assemblywoman Naomi Rivera to address teens from around the state in Albany today during the teens' advocacy training on health issues affecting young people.

Youth Advocate Shelby Knox to serve as keynote speaker.

Twenty-two-year-old youth activist Shelby Knox will be in Albany Monday talking with more than 100 teens from around the state about her experiences as an activist. In addressing the teens at the youth leadership conference at the Empire State Plaza, she'll talk about what differences her work has made, the challenges of activism and satsifaction she experiences, and why she's devoting her professional career to activism. This compelling young woman will share with the teens who she was before she found her voice, how that happened and how that voice is making real change for her and for society.

Shelby's bio: Following her activist efforts in The Education of Shelby Knox, Shelby graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Political Science. She continues to travel across the country as a speaker and organizer with a specialization in designing workshop programming for youth leaders. Shelby has appeared on The Today Show, Good Morning America and the Dr. Phil Show, as well as in Glamour, Bust and Seventeen magazines. The 22 year old blogs on feminist and sexual health for The Huffington Post and contributes to the feminist quarterly, the F-Word. She currently lives in New York City.

Teens will come from around the state to the Get the Facts NY Youth Leadership Conference hosted by The Education Fund of Family Planning Advocates of New York State.

Family Planning Advocates of New York State is a non-profit, statewide organization dedicated to protecting and expanding access to a full range of reproductive health care services. It represents New York's Planned Parenthood affiliates and other family planning centers, as well as hundreds of organizations and thousands of individual members. The Education Fund of FPA conducts research, carries out policy analysis and provides a variety of education, training and outreach programs related to sexual and reproductive health services and education.
