BATAVIA, NY (08/26/2010)(readMedia)-- Five Genesee Community College faculty members, as well as one classified service staff member have received SUNY Chancellor's Awards, which recognize outstanding contributions to their respective professional fields, campuses, communities, and the public at large.
The six faculty members are: Lauren Paisley, instructor of Business, Marirose Ethington, professor of Biology, Cheryl Corke, instructor of Accounting, Susan Drexel, instructor of Sociology, and Anne Heale, Arcade Campus Center Associate. Additionally, an award for non-faculty Classified Service employees was created last year. Berneda Scoins, clerk-typist for Humanities was honored with this award.
Lauren Paisley received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities. Lauren is a Business faculty member where she teaches marketing classes. She is very involved in student activities such as mentoring student clubs, the International Student Organization, the Global Education Committee, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and the Collegiate Entrepreneur (CEO) Club. Lauren has also been integral in the development of the Business and Commerce Student Development Series and the Cross-Cultural Student Development Series. She has worked at Genesee since 2002 when she started as an adjunct instructor. She holds a Bachelor's degree from D'Youville College and an MBA from the University of Buffalo. Lauren is a resident of Middleport, NY.
Marirose Ethington received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Faculty Service. Marirose is an instructor of Biology and has been teaching at Genesee since 1991, and she won the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2001. She has a strong commitment to the College where she has chaired the Foundation's Annual campaign for 2009-2010 where the campaign surpassed its goal. She also served as the chair for the Director of Veterinary Technology Search Committee. Marirose instructors many courses, works with curriculum development as well as attends many workshops and conferences for professional development. She holds both a Bachelors and Masters degree from SUNY Geneseo in Biology. Marirose is a resident of East Bethany, NY.
Cheryl Corke received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. Cheryl joined the Genesee faculty in 2005 bringing with her extensive experience in the private sector business arena. She has received strong student evaluations from the very start of her teaching, a result from her belief that students learn best when actively engaged in the classroom. She has developed several innovative class projects to provide hands-on learning experiences with practical applications that the students can learn from. Additionally, Cheryl contributes to the college community as a member of the Academic Senate and she chairs the Student Success standing committee. One of her community volunteer projects is the Volunteer Income Tax Assistant program. Cheryl is a resident of Rochester, NY.
Susan Drexel received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. Susan's history at Genesee goes back to 2004 when she was first hired as a Technical Assistant at one of our campus centers. She began teaching that year on an adjunct basis and became a full-time faculty member in 2006 teaching Sociology. Sue's students frequently comment on the high level of enthusiasm she brings to the classroom and the many ways she finds to encourage them and challenges them to think outside the box. Sue is also co-chair of the Honors Program, and she recently participated in the FATEC English immersion program in Brazil where she, along with two colleagues, taught English to Brazilian students. Sue is a resident of Livonia, NY.
Anne Heale received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional Service. Anne is a key contributor to student development and advisement at the Arcade Campus Center. She serves as a conduit of information between the Batavia campus and the campus center with advisement information to students and staff at that location. She is proactive in finding ways to communicate with students today, even setting up a Facebook account where students can instant message her throughout the day. Anne has helped to mentor many new campus center employees at all locations. She is highly regarded for her knowledge and experience. Anne resides in Arcade, NY.
Berneda Scoins received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Classified Service. Berneda has served the college with professionalism and commitment for the past 21years. She is conscientious and competent in her work in Humanities, and also with many extra activities she does as a volunteer member of several committees or special functions at Genesee over the years. She brings a high degree of "customer service" into all of her work, and is particularly mindful of her role in providing service to students and faculty members in the Humanities area. Berneda is a resident of Batavia, NY.
Each of these distinguished College employees and SUNY honorees were honored at a reception at President Dr. Stuart Steiner's home on August 19, 2010.
