BURLINGTON, VT (04/12/2011)(readMedia)-- Nationally acclaimed author and educator, Diane Levin, Ph.D., is coming to Champlain College on May 18 to discuss her book, "So Sexy So Soon: The New Sexualized Childhood and What Parents Can Do to Protect Their Kids."
In an age in which pop culture and technology are on the rise, Levin says, children are constantly being heavily marketed by mixed messages at an early age. "The book offers suggestions, helpful sample dialogues, and true stories from families dealing with these issues."
"So Sexy So Soon" provides parents with the information, skills, and confidence they will need to discuss sensitive topics openly and effectively so their kids can just be kids," Levin said.
The evening presentation on May 18 is open to early childhood educators, parents, students and community members from 6:30-8 p.m. at Alumni Auditorium. Admission is $20.
"Reading 'So Sexy So Soon,' you will feel empowered by having the knowledge and skills you need to effectively and caringly help your children navigate the sexualized minefields of our culture. You will feel prepared to help your children grow up sexually and healthy and whole – to survive and thrive, even in today's sexualized world," writes Levin in the introduction to the book.
Levin has written seven books including: "The War Play Dilemma," "Teaching Young Children in Violent Times" and "Remote Control Childhood? Levin has a B.S. in Child Development from Cornell University, an M.S.Ed. in Special Education from Wheelock College, and an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Sociology of Education and Child Development from Tufts University.
An internationally recognized expert, Levin helps parents and professionals understand and counteract the harmful effects of violence, war, media and commercial culture on children. She gives over thirty keynote addresses, trainings and workshops for parents and teachers a year-throughout the United States and in such countries as Australia, Great Britain, Jamaica, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Portugal, the Republic of Ireland, and South Korea.
