SAVANNAH, GA (05/16/2013)(readMedia)-- Somers, New York local Lindsay Baker recently won the title of national champion in the intermediate over fences division at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Nationals. The internationally acclaimed equestrian competition took place May 3-5, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Baker's decision to pursue equestrian studies was strongly influenced by her upbringing.

"I learned at an early age the responsibilities and dedication it takes to have and care for animals during all stages of life. I fell in love with the industry and wanted to pursue a career in the equestrian field," Baker said. "Savannah College of Art and Design's equestrian program was on the top of my list. The beautiful facilities and knowledgeable staff helped solidify my decision to attend SCAD as an equestrian studies major."

Since its establishment in 1967, the IHSA has grown to include 37 regions in eight zones, with nearly 400 member colleges in 45 U.S. states and Canada. The association represents more than 9,000 riders in the disciplines of hunt-seat equitation, western horsemanship and reining.

Each region's high-point team leader competes head-to-head with the other high-point teams in its zone for the right to represent the zone for national team championship honors, known as the Collegiate Cup for the Hunter Seat division and the American Quarter Horse Association Trophy in the western division. Regional high-point riders are eligible for national individual championship honors.

Full-time undergraduate students of member colleges and alumni who competed in the IHSA as undergraduates are eligible to compete. The SCAD Equestrian Team ended the 2013 IHSA National competition in third place out of 15 college zone team winners.
