Splenda Shines in Fair Baking Competition

DES MOINES, IA (08/20/2023) (readMedia)-- Kim Peterson of Granger won first place and a $200 gift card in the Spenda Low-To-No Sugar Showdown competition, judged Saturday, August 12, at the 2023 Iowa State Fair.

Susie Jones of Winterset earned second place and a $100 gift card. Jenn Goellner of Urbandale claimed third place and a $50 gift card.

Judges also awarded Honorable Mention to Holly Houg of Urbandale and Rita Cashman Becker of Fort Madison.

Contestants were challenged to create an award-worthy cookie, cake, pie or bread using a Splenda product.

Entries were judges on creativity, taste, appearance and texture.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 138 divisions, 695 classes and over 6,800 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center.
