Springfield Soldier promoted to master sergeant

SPRINGFIELD, IL (05/04/2013)(readMedia)-- Roger Purnell of Springfield, with the Illinois Army National Guard's 108th Sustainment Brigade in Chicago, was promoted to the rank of master sergeant at Camp Lincoln in Springfield May 4. Purnell's wife, Tonya, pinned the new rank on her husband. His daughters, Star and Kaitlyn, were also present for the promotion ceremony.
Purnell enlisted in the Illinois Army National Guard in 1977. He works as a material handler and has been employed as a full-time federal technician with the National Guard for 35 years.
Purnell has spent more than 20 years with Joint Force Headquarters in Springfield and recently transferred to the 108th to work in the operations section.
