State DOT Sets Hearing On Randall's Island Rail Crossing Request

June 20 Hearing in Manhattan to Focus on New Bike/ Pedestrian Crossing Plan

ALBANY, NY (06/06/2012)(readMedia)-- The New York State Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, June 20, beginning at 10 a.m. at the New York City Economic Development Corporation offices in Manhattan regarding a request by the City of New York to establish a public, at-grade rail crossing of the CSX Transportation, Inc. railroad line near the Bronx Kill in the Bronx. The crossing would run between Bronx County and Randall's Island in New York City.

NYSDOT Acting Chief Administrative Law Judge Robert A. Rybak will preside over the hearing at 110 William Street, Conference Room 5B, New York, NY, 10038. Individuals attending this hearing are to report to the NYCEDC reception area on the 6th floor.

The hearing will establish a record and enable a determination as to whether the establishment of such a crossing is necessary. The NYSDOT case number for the request is 38618.

In an April 18 letter requesting the hearing, the City stated that it was constructing the Randall's Island Connector Project, which will provide a critical pedestrian and bicycle transportation connection between the South Bronx residential community and approximately 400 acres of recreational space on Randall's Island, as well as encourage and enhance alternative transit modes. As part of this project, the City is proposing the construction of a public at-grade railroad crossing on public property. The crossing would be limited to pedestrians, bicyclists, emergency vehicles, small maintenance vehicles from the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation and Consolidated Edison service vehicles.
