Statement by United Way of New York State on Governor's Executive Order on Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention

ALBANY, NY (06/02/2009)(readMedia)-- "We applaud Governor Paterson's action in establishing through Executive Order, a state agency Task Force on Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention.

Despite the fact that childhood lead poisoning is 100% preventable, thousands of children continue to be lead poisoned each year. In addition, a significant percentage of children are not tested as required by law at ages 1 and 2.

Unlike many childhood diseases, the effects of childhood lead poisoning are irreversible, affecting children's' health, IQ, and their ability to learn in school.

By establishing childhood lead poisoning prevention as a priority for his Administration, the Governor has made a significant commitment to long-term sustainable results.

The Governor's Order reflects the recognition that this complex issue requires many players working together to address this problem.

The Order establishes a tight timeframe with specific outcomes to: identify actions already being undertaken, consult with community and advocacy groups, target primary prevention initially to those communities with high rates of elevated blood levels but then moving out statewide, develop recommendations with specific action steps and projected timelines, and identify funding to support the work.

First Deputy Secretary Valerie Grey's role in leading the work of the task force is very welcome. Ms. Grey's knowledge and understanding of the issues and players is well established, as is the trust she gained during last fall's dialogues which she organized on lead prevention issues.

We look forward to supporting the Task Force's work, and to a new era of high level attention to this critical issue."
