Statement from Congressional Candidate Lee Zeldin

Zeldin Comments on Tonight’s State of the Union Address

SHIRLEY, NY (01/28/2008)(readMedia)-- Despite the economic challenges that currently dominate the headlines, there is hope. For the hardworking families and homeowners of Eastern Long Island, tonight’s State of the Union address presented a number of positive domestic and national security initiatives targeted at enhancing our quality of life.

Tonight, the president called upon Congress to swiftly enact the recently agreed upon economic stimulus package and address the numerous challenges currently facing our economy. My proposal would provide even more relief to hard working middle class Long Islanders, but I would support Washington’s plan over no plan at all. Additionally, both parties must work together to make tax cuts permanent so that families, young and old, can remain on Long Island.

In terms of keeping our nation safe, I agree with the president that it all begins with our active-duty service members and military veterans. I get chills when I see the entire Chamber rise to applaud the hard work of our men and women in uniform. The surge is undoubtedly working even if my opponent and his Pelosi-in-Chief want to disagree. I am not pro-war, but I am pro-victory. When our soldiers come home from war, they should do so with their heads held high rather than dragging their head in the sand with a white flag on their backs. Washington’s attitude will set the stage for victory.

One main front towards improving our nation’s security comes at the border. A nation without borders is no nation at all. Likewise, we must resolve the complexities of illegal immigration in a way that abides by both our laws and our highest ideals. Congress must also do more to assist our senior citizens and military veterans. Actions speak louder than words, and Congress must work towards finding necessary solutions rather than artful rhetoric.

Tonight’s speech provides cause for optimism in the face of adversity. This evening, even from the halls of Congress in Washington, D.C., it is abundantly clear that Long Island’s future begins now.
