They are the hundreds of ready-to-be-categorized,used-books that will be the source of satisfaction and delight for scores of Capital Region bibliophiles who make the Landis Arboretum a destination of choice every year for the annual Plant/Used-Book, and Bake Sales that have become signature events at Landis, the Capital Region’s Arboretum.
And why not? The natural splendor of the 548-acre Landis Arboretum provides idyllic cover for book buyers, sellers, and collectors to browse-and-buy among the wide array of hardcover offerings in good condition. The Fall Plant Sale – always the second weekend following Labor Day –falls on Saturday and Sunday, September 15 – 16. Regardless of the weather, the Sale will take place under cover in the Arboretum’s 1830s rustic English barn from 10 AM – 4 PM. Fresh-baked goods and steaming coffee will add to browsers’ pleasure. Proceeds will benefit maintenance and improvements at Landis, the Capital Region’s Arboretum.
Volunteer Driven
The annual Book Sale is made possible through the generosity of the Arboretum’s friends, tireless volunteers, and supporters who gather books throughout the year with the sale in mind. Volunteers clean and categorize the offerings – both hard and soft cover – with a price range that few can refuse. Categories include, but are not limited to, science and nature, gardening, reference, poetry, children's litature, mystery, self-help, diet and nutrition.
Marian Hotopp and her husband Ken (Cobleskill) are regular volunteers at the Arboretum. She notes that “many generous individuals from throughout the Capital Region – and business, too, such as The Owl Pen of Greenwich, The Book House of Stuyvesant Plaza, and Catnap Books of Cobleskill -- contribute to the success of the sale each year.
