RAYNHAM, MASS. (07/24/2012)(readMedia)-- In the first half of 2012, steady sales of Subaru's Outback and Legacy were overshadowed by the impressive 167-percent year-over-year sales growth of the redesigned 2012 Subaru Impreza. Nonetheless, the Outback wagon remained Subaru's best-seller, and sales of both vehicles have increased year-to-date, with the Outback up 5 percent year-over-year and the Legacy sedan rising 14 percent. Now that refreshed 2013 models of both vehicles have arrived at Subaru dealerships, those numbers could look even better in the second half of the year.
The 2013 Subaru Outback and Legacy have both been outfitted with a new 2.5-liter FB series Boxer engine for improved power and fuel efficiency. Perhaps more significantly, the new powerplant has more low-end torque across a broad speed range, which means that each vehicle is more responsive in day-to-day driving. The 2013 Outback and Legacy are also debuting Subaru's affordable EyeSight driver-assist system, which uses a stereo-camera design to incorporate Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking and Vehicle Lane Departure Warning.
"The current generations of the Outback and Legacy are very popular with customers, so the changes for 2013 were meant to augment their strengths rather than reinvent the wheel," said Chris Dunn, general sales manager of Mastria Subaru, a Subaru dealer in Raynham, Mass. "That said, the tweaks are extensive, whether you're talking about performance, fuel efficiency, ride quality, style or safety."
Each receiving new headlights and a redesigned front grille and bumper, the 2013 Subaru Outback and Legacy project a more aggressive air than their predecessors. Under their sheet metal, the refreshed Subarus are also now available with a new Lineartronic continuously variable transmission that features a six-speed manual mode with steering-wheel paddle shifters.
The 2013 Outback and Legacy also benefit from several enhancements to their body structures, suspensions and steering to create smoother, quieter and more agile rides, in addition to a 40-percent reduction in body roll. Meanwhile, the standard audio system in the 2013 Outback and Legacy has been upgraded to now include Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, as well as a USB charging port.
While the Outback and Legacy continue to put up impressive performances in the showroom, the entire Subaru lineup was firing on all cylinders in June. With the exception of the fast-selling BRZ sports car, which wasn't on sale last year, each Subaru model posted a year-over-year sales increase last month. Those sales not only broke Subaru's record for June, but they helped the automaker top TrueCar.com's Performance Scorecards for the second-straight month.
"TrueCar.com's Performance Scorecards rate auto brands on everything from sales and pricing to market share and customer loyalty, so Subaru has some pretty incredible momentum going right now," added Dunn. "The brand has always been known for its reliability and capability, but now style and fuel efficiency have entered the equation as well, and that can be an unbeatable mix."
